Statewide Juneteenth Celebrations Are Coming to the Kansas State Capitol Grounds

The Stardusters Organization and the Kansas Black Expo will host a Juneteenth Outdoor Festival & Celebration at the Capitol on June 17, 2023, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Juneteenth celebrations are held the third week of June to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on June 1, 1863. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed on June 1st, Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19th because it was on that very day Texas, the last state agreed to end slavery.

In addition to commemorating the end of slavery nationally, the Capitol Juneteenth event will include activities for the entire family like freedom tours, music performances, dining opportunities, and games for the kids to enjoy.
