On June 28, 2018, John Lee Hooker and Mike Manns “hung up their headphones” at Majic 107.7. After more than 33 years, Hooker & Manns are retiring from their immensely popular morning radio program.
During their final broadcast, they guys took phone calls from lifelong listeners, former co-workers, friends, and family. People called to share funny memories, wish them happiness and to congratulate Hooker & Manns on their retirement. The former program director of 107.7, Rose, returned to the show. Rose was on-air on 107.7 for more than 20 years. Others on the show included John Lee Hooker’s wife, two daughters and one of his sons. Mike Manns’ wife and both of his daughters called to say congrats. And, the cherry on top, has to be when they answered the phone to hear the voice of Topeka Mayor, Michelle De La Isla, who called to read a proclamation stating June 28th is now “Hooker and Manns Day” in Topeka. You can hear the full proclamation on our sound cloud account. Listen to the audio from her call and you’ll hear John Lee Hooker’s story about the time they were named Mayor for a day.
The day concluded with a retirement party held at Vikings Grille in Topeka. Hundreds stopped by for a chance snap a picture with Hooker & Manns. Free cake was served, many prizes were given away (including Taylor Swift tickets, a weekend getaway package to Kansas City from KCattractions.com) and many handshakes, hugs and wonderful memories were shared. Thank you to Keith Horinek who provided his photography services to us for this event. To see additional pictures from the final broadcast, as well as the retirement party, visit TheSpottedGuy.com.
