Mary Charity, third-grade teacher at Williams Science and Fine Arts Magnet School, is our
December Crystal Apple Award recipient!
For Mary, teaching is more than a career, it’s a calling. In 2011, she stepped into the classroom
for the very first time. Fourteen years later, she continues to create life-changing experiences for
the students who depend on her most.
Her nominator, Amanda Williams, says Mary “is the definition of teacher”, someone who makes
students feel safe, supported, and capable from the moment they walk through the door.
Mary’s students often face big challenges, but she meets them with patience, love, and high
expectations. She’s known in the building for helping kids grow academically, guiding them
through tough emotions, and cheering them on every step of the way. Amanda shared, “She’s
beloved by everyone she meets, and she truly cares about student success.”
Outside of her classroom, Mary sponsors the spelling bee, runs a math club, and serves as the
Title I Family Engagement Coordinator, helping turn school events into huge community
celebrations. She also believes deeply in giving kids new experiences, from field trips to the
Coterie Theatre to hands-on learning in the school’s rainforest, desert lab, and art lab.
Mary summed it up perfectly: “Education is the great equalizer. I’ll believe in my students until
they can believe in themselves.”
As our December Crystal Apple Award winner, Mary receives an engraved crystal apple and a
one-night stay at Prairie Band Casino & Resort, plus $50 in casino amenities.
Congratulations, Mary Charity, on being this month’s Crystal Apple Award winner!
