Stephanie Duncan, Director of Lawrence Community Nursery School (LCNS), is this month’s Crystal Apple Award recipient! With over 20 years of leadership, Stephanie has made a lasting impact on generations of children and families in the Lawrence community by making preschool education more accessible, inclusive, and joy-filled than ever.
LCNS was founded in 1948 as one of the nation’s first cooperative, low-cost preschools. Since stepping into her role as Director and Lead Teacher in 2003, Stephanie has carried that mission forward with heart and vision.
Stephanie doesn’t just lead a school, she leads a community. Her nominators, Tom and Gail Sloan, said, “She finds a special way to connect with each child who comes through the LCNS gate.” She raises funds to provide scholarships for families in need, and she encourages parents to pitch in as classroom “Participants,” helping with tasks like cleaning and event setup.
With a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education and a background in Art History, Stephanie adds both structure and imagination in her lessons. Her classroom is a warm, welcoming space where children are encouraged to explore, ask questions, and be themselves.
But what really sets Stephanie apart is her ability to wear all the hats. Stephanie has been described as “warm, fun-loving, vibrant, and energetic.” She’s not only the lead teacher, she’s also the fundraiser, facilities manager, administrator, and community connector. Whether she’s planning a lesson, comforting a nervous parent, or organizing roof repairs, Stephanie does it all with compassion, creativity, and a smile.
Her care doesn’t end when preschool ends. Former students and their families say Stephanie never forgets a name or a face. She continues to check in, say hello, and support LCNS alumni—sometimes years after they’ve moved on. That kind of lasting connection is something truly special.
As a Crystal Apple Award winner, Stephanie receives a custom-engraved award and a relaxing night away at Prairie Band Casino & Resort, complete with dinner, free play, and an overnight stay.
