Remembering John Lee Hooker: A Voice of Topeka

John Lee Hooker, a beloved radio personality from KMAJ-FM, passed away on May 5, 2025, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by many. For over three decades, John Lee Hooker, alongside his co-host Mike Manns, brought joy, laughter, and a sense of community to the listeners 107.7 FM in Topeka and across Northeast Kansas.

John’s journey with KMAJ-FM began in October 1984, and he quickly became a staple in the lives of Topeka residents. His dedication to the morning show was evident as he often arrived at the station by 3 a.m. to prepare for the day’s broadcast beginning at 5:30 a.m.

Together with Mike Manns, John created an improvisational comedy routine that resonated with listeners, making their mornings brighter and more enjoyable.

The duo’s chemistry and ability to connect with their audience were unparalleled. They understood the importance of starting the day with a smile and often shared stories of their own lives and memories that reflected the local community’s spirit.

Their farewell broadcast in June 2018 was a testament to their impact, with calls from lifelong listeners, former coworkers, friends, and family pouring in to share their gratitude and fond memories.
