The 2023-24 school year has drawn to a close in Shawnee County and the surrounding areas, and teachers are now enjoying their well-deserved summer vacation after nurturing tomorrow’s scholars. However, in St. Marys, Kansas, one teacher is bidding farewell to an illustrious career—a remarkable 43 years of service to a single classroom!

St. Marys Grade School is buzzing with excitement as they celebrate Connie Carr’s extraordinary journey. Her tireless commitment to education has left an indelible mark on generations of students, culminating in her recent recognition with the prestigious Crystal Apple Award. Nominated by her colleague Lisa Kinderknecht, Carr’s impact extends far beyond the classroom. Her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering passion for teaching have inspired countless students to reach for the stars.

From her early days as an enthusiastic educator to her current role as a respected mentor, Carr’s legacy is woven into the very fabric of St. Marys. Lisa’s nomination letter to Mrs. Carr captures the essence of her dedication:

I would like to Nominate Connie Carr for your June Crystal Apple Award.  Mrs. Carr has been teaching kindergarten at SMGS for the past 43 years and is beloved by her professional peers and every current and former student she teaches and has taught.  The impact she has made in the school and our community goes far beyond the academic piece, it is seen in the character of each and every kindergarten student she has touched over the past 43 years including my two children.

Mrs. Carr will be retiring after 43 years in the same school on May 21st.  The legacy she is leaving behind will live on in SMGS history.  I and every staff member and student at SMGS would appreciate you considering this loyal and dynamic teacher for your Crystal Apple Award as she finishes a spectacular teaching career… this would be an awesome way to send her off into her new journey!

“To celebrate Mrs. Carr’s 43-year commitment to St. Marys Grade School, she will receive the following:

Additionally, St. Marys Grade School is in the running for a $1,000 donation, which will be awarded in January 2025.”

As Connie Carr embarks on a well-deserved retirement, the school community reflects on the countless lives she has touched. Her genuine care for her students and unwavering dedication will be sorely missed. On behalf of the Majic Morning Show, Majic 107.7 and our friends at Prairie Band Casino, congratulations, Connie Carr, and thank you for your extraordinary service!
