Want to shine at work?

Let’s be honest, most of us have a boss. And, it would be great to know what was really going on inside our bosses head, but sadly, the technology doesn’t yet exist.

If you want to shine at work, here are a few facts that your boss would like you to know:

  • First: What you do outside of work matters. So before you post anything on social media like Facebook or Twitter, ask yourself, “Would I mind if my boss read this?” If you share too much about your weekend or complain about your coworkers, your boss may think you’re unprofessional. That could cost you a raise, a promotion – or even your job.
  • Another thing your boss wishes you knew: Your attitude is just as important as your ability to follow directions, and meet your deadlines. So is how well you get along with your boss and your coworkers. Even if you’re great at your job, if people find you abrasive or rude, it’ll be hard for your boss to promote you.
  • Another tip: Dress like the higher-ups– like you’re about to meet with the company president. Experts say that clothes aren’t everything, but if you look like you’re ready to be promoted, you’re more likely to be.
  • Finally, your boss wishes you’d be a problem-solver. Most employees bring up problems and expect the boss to solve them. But you’ll stand out from the pack if you’re part of the solution. For example, say you’re stalled on a project and don’t know what to do next. Give your boss 3 possible options. Even if they choose something entirely different, they’ll appreciate the fact that you’re thinking ahead.
